The existing Victorian Methodist church of Sunfields was both larger than the present church congregation required and was a steadying drain on capital, with its ever increasing maintenance works. It was decided to seek demolition of the old larger church and replace it with a smaller flexible church, which could be subsidised with new houses built on the remaining space on the site. The church was placed on the predominant road with wider views, while the houses were placed at the end of an established terraces of houses.
